JULIA OVERTON

Julia Overton has had a long career in the screen and cultural production industry across all story telling genres. Her recent credits include the theatrical documentaries THE LAST IMPRESARIO (London, Hamptons, Doc NYC, SFF) RED OBSESSION (Berlin, Tribeca, Pusan, Best Doc 2014, AACTA) as well as FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE LAKE for See-Saw Films (Hot Docs 2014) and TRENT PARKE THE BLACK ROSE (ABC 2015). Like most producers Julia has a slate of projects in various stages of production and development.

For ten years from 2001 to 2011 Julia worked with Australia's national screen agencies assisting filmmakers in the development, financing, production and marketing of their projects. In the last six years of this tenure she specialised in documentary and factual production for broadcast and theatrical release and assisted in the formulation of policy in that area.

Julia has worked with all key investment bodies in Australia and New Zealand and has strong international ties with financiers, production entities and sales agents. She is known for her support and nurturing of the best in directing, producting and writing talents.

Julia has been on the board of the AIDC, where she is now a marketing consultant, is an international advisor for Hot Docs Canada, FIFO Tahiti, Doc Edge New Zealand, has been a board member for Wide Angle the Tasmanisan screen resource agency and is national co ordinator for INPUT the public broadcast television event. In May 2012 this annual event was held in Sydney and she was the co director of this event. She has been on numerous jury's and lectures in many aspects of film production and teaches at events around the world. Julia is on the selection panel for the David and Joan Williams Scholarship an annual award that supports the development of emerging documentarians with a distinctive story telling style.

In 2012 Julia was presented with the Stanley Hawes Award in acknowledgement of her contribution to the documentary sector. She has production credits across all genres - documentary and drama - feature film. television, children's and animation and has worked consistently in the independent sector. Her most notable producing credits would include the award winning films UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD (director Wim Wenders, Berlinale), BLACK MANS HOUSES (director Steve Thomas SFF Rouben Mamoulian Award, Melbourne Erwin Rado Award)), FISTFUL OF FLIES (director Monica Pelizzari Venice and Sundance), AFTERSHOCKS (director Geoff Burton AFI awarded) THE LONG RIDE (director Pip Karmel AFI awarded) and many more. Prior to working in Australia Julia spent three years at CBC Canada working in the documentary arena. She started her working life in London where she worked in TV drama production. She has a BA Hons 1st majoring in English Literature, Classics and Communications.
